Trouble Seeing Far: Myopia occurs in many people and means you have problems seeing far away but usually don't have trouble reading or seeing things closer to you. Typically it can't be prevented and occurs when the eye becomes a bit more oval or longer in shape. Any changes in vision should be evaluated by a doctor to be sure that it's not something more severe or dangerous. For example, diabetes can affect vision.

Not all have it: This is a condition in which in the presence of higher degrees of myopia (not very common) there are changes at the back of the eye near the areas that see fine detail in which the retina may stretch, develop pigment changes and sometimes bleed.  It is very, very uncommon and most myopes, even extreme don't have this.  Any ophthalmologist can find this if present and the best steps can be taken.

Myopia is usually genetic and there is no known reason.  It could be caused by a longer than normal eye or a steeper cornea.

If useful: We generally restrict contacts to those over age 12 or so as the wearer should be able to handle the lenses.  For those older, it is sensible if you have the need for them and can handle them (following directions properly).  They can be cosmetically and visually helpful and in more extreme cases of myopia, can actually make the vision better than glasses.

Stability and age: The key here is stability and age. Most surgeons wait until the patient is past early 20's when a lot of change in the eye is still occurring. Plus your refraction should be stable for several years, that is your glasses prescription has not changed. I don't do lasik , I am an oculoplastic surgeon, but we refer people out for this operation and these are the parameters we use.

Depends on age: There is some information that use of certain eyedrops during childhood may be able to slow progression of, but not cure, myopia. After age 21, with stable readings, one can consider laser refractive surgery (i.e. Lasik or prk) if the affected individual does not want to wear glasses or contact lenses to correct the myopia. Myopic eyes are at higher risk for glaucoma and retinal detachment.

Myopia Reversible: Myopia is correctable.  Glasses, contact lenses, refractive surgery.  But not reversible per say.  
Myopia is a basically an anatomic variation.   The goal of any eye is to focus light onto the retina.  In a myopic eye the eye is too long and the lens and cornea are too powerful.  So light is focused in front of the retina.  Lenses and surgery just change where the focal point is.

Myopia Stablization: Myopia typically plateaus in one's early 20's. It is a very individual process. Some peple's myopia may take until their 30'a to stabilize.
