Anxiety and more: Anxiety is one source of lack of empathy.  Another is the person may be too self-involved, self-absorbed, self-centered.  More often than not the lack of empathy is a relatively permanent personality characteristic.  I said "relatively" because a few counselors are trained to work with the deeper issues underlying self-absorption.  So, there is some hope.

Empathy: Compassion is understanding & relating to what the person is going through, not discrediting their feelings or emotions for the fear of tragic outcome. Spending time listening to what the person is telling us, and providing support & guidance go a long way in giving that person hope & purpose in life.

Get help: You've posted numerous messages over the last week or so with questions about depression and antidepressants. You sound pretty desperate. It also sounds like you're being treated. If you have a psychiatrist, you need to let him know. If you're not also getting psychotherapy, think about it. The last resort for refractory depression is hospitalization &amp; electroshock. But I think you CAN lick this.

No: Antisocial personality disorder includes a lack of empathy. Someone could have bi-polar and antisocial personality disorder, but they don't go together as a rule. Sometimes people with bipolar have episodes where they don't seem to have any empathy but it usually comes back. Bi-polar can be treated, so if you or someone you know has it, be sure to seek help.
