These fibers also have a sheath covering them called "myelin" which is also part of white matter.  If white matter is damaged in some way -- by stroke, inflammation, or disease like ms -- it shows up on MRI scans.  Gray matter can be damaged also.

It is usually caused by edema (swelling) or damage, causing an accumulation of fluid in the area, so the the gray matter, where nerve cell bodies are located.  The white matter contains the nerve fibers that travel throughout the brain.

Which planet we on?: Here on Earth there are no human beings who leak Grey matter into white matter. Do you have a report of some sort that you're looking at &amp; trying to interpret?  The only thing I can think of that would have any remote significance to what you're saying is called "heterotopia" which refers to islands of gray matter within white matter territory.  Seizures are known to occur as a main manifestation.

So, it may be important to add cervical spinal cord MRI, lumbar puncture, and several blood studies to confirm.  Find an experienced, seasoned neurologist to carry this evaluation to conclusion.

Regenerative capacity: Peripheral nerves can regenerate to some extent. Central nervous system, both grey and white matter have very limited regenerative capacity.
