It depends: If the sex is with someone you care for and who cares about you, relaxing and enjoying are more "normal."  sometimes temporary fears about performance can be normal, if they ultimately dissipate.  However if it's forced sex, or with someone who mistreats you or whom you don't trust, being unable to relax can be a useful signal from your body.  Different situations, different responses.

Abnormal but common: Many people have trouble relaxing during sex, although i wouldn't call it "normal" exactly.  Causes are many, and include distraction or preoccupation by other issues, discomfort with partner, guilt, feeling physically or emotionally  unsafe, self-consciousness, physical illness or pain, etc.  Is this recent, vs lifelong?  Talk to your partner, and/or seek counseling or therapy.

Definately see PCP: This sounds very frustrating.  I would start with PCP eval, there are likely some things that can help him, PCP can refer to possibly Occupational therapy, or other kind of feeding therapy to work on optimizing his experience .Good Luck and best wishes!

NUTRITIONIST: FIRST MAKE SURE YOU ARE UP TO DATE WITH YOUR CHECKUPS AND PREVENTIVE HEALTH. NEXT, SPEAK WITH A NUTRITIONIST. IT IS DIFFICULT TO ADAPT LIFE STYLE CHANGES, BUT IN MY OPINION WEIGHT LOSS IS 80% WHAT WE EAT AND 20% EXERCISE/ACTIVITY. START WALKING FOR 60 MINS X 5 DAYS/WEEK. I AM A HUGE FAN OF FRESH SMOOTHIES AND HAVE ONE CHEAT DAY/WEEK TO ENJOY MY RESTAURANT MEAL.

Go see your doctor: New studies suggest that erectile dysfunction predates heart disease by 10yrs so go see your doc if it persists. But 1st, ask yourself if anything has changed? Stress can cause ED whether from job, money, family, relationship etc. So can tobacco, excess alcohol plus other recreational drugs. Some medications don't help. Poor health such as obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol can also cause ED.
