Parainfluenza virus: Usually true 'croup' is caused by parainfluenza b virus. This is usually self limiting disease which causes inflammation of the voice box and treated by cool steam and in severe cases by corticosteroid injection. Differential diagnosis is more important, cause it might be mistaken with epiglotitis which is life threatening and caused by bacteria.

Croup: I assume that your children have been immunized against  haemophilus influenza? If not, make sure that their croup is viral in origin, and not bacterial.Epiglottis which is a virulent infection has to be considered if it is bacterial and has to be treated vigorously. In the same vein, you dhould also be cultured to rule out a bacterial infection. Treatment usually is intense steaming.

Cases of croup peak in the fall and winter and are generally most common in children ages 3 months to 3 years.

Supportive Rx: If the symptoms are severe go to an emergency room immediately. Otherwise keep your child calm with soothing interactions since crying makes things worse, moisten the air with a humidifier, keep your child in an upright position, give a lot of fluids, and encourage rest. Children's acetaminophen (Tylenol) given carefully only as prescribed may help with fever.
