In certain countries: The Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PNDT) of 2002 in your native country of India prohibits ultrasound physicians from determining the gender of your infant, in an attempt to reduce female feticide. Although it is possible that your physician saw the gender of your baby during scanning, it is unlikely that a picture of the sex organs was saved. Be happy with your baby regardless of gender.

i have just been told at my 20 week anomaly scan that there is a pericardial effusion measuring max 2.4mm. is 2.4mm high?

Not normal: A pericardial effusion is not commonly seen at all on 20 week ultrasounds.  You should see a high risk doctor.

hello i just went for a 20 week anomaly scan and my fetus has clinodactyly . can i terminate due to this or not? clinodactyly can be linked to other syndromes but my gynae says i cant terminate. please help !

Life is never exact: Life is not so predictable. One can terminate if her baby has a major defect such as a trisomy chromosome. Generally, that should happen before 24 weeks but laws are written by "people," which means even at 20 weeks, you may have to travel to a state where the "people" allow 20-week abortions. But first... must decide if the baby is normal or not. Some normal people have pinkies clinodactyly.

Early gender guess: Nuchal thickness is the U/S appearance of neck tissue in the first 3 months of a pregnancy. Of 56,000 pts, the neck in females is about 10% thinner. No one knows why.

  The measurement is used to exclude Down's, not for sexing. Most reliable is to wait until you can see a penis later in the pregnancy.

i just had my five months anomaly scan n was told that my placenta is posterior grade0 maturity , 3 cm away from os . what does this mean???

All good: Your placenta is on the Barack wall of your uterus and well above your cervix so it won't be in the way when the baby comes out and it isn't getting old and wearing out. It should still do a good job of nourishing the baby. It's all good.

my wife  anomaly  scan showed  placenta grade 2 maturity  as my wife is 20 week pregnant.is there anything to worry  or it is normal?

It's normal: Placentas are usually graded on sonogram base on the degree of calcification that is present within the placenta. These may appears as white echogenic areas on sonogram. The grading as somewhat subjective but in general the farther along the pregnancy, the more mature is the placenta and hence there is more calcification present. A grade 3 placenta may imply that the pregnancy is term or near term

Get another scan: Fluid in the baby's kidneys is not "normal," but is somewhat common. I think you are describing renal pylectasis, or dilation of kidney. This often will resolve on its own, but you should still have follow-up. Your doctor will probably recommend this in 2-4 weeks, depending on severity.

Usually normal: In an adult ultrasound, and in the absence of other findings, a prominent renal pelvis is frequently seen as a normal anatomy variation of the kidney.  If there are urologic symptoms as the reason behind getting the ultrasound however, follow up with a urologist should be made.

Question unclear: There is no question posted here, but merely a statement. Please start over and post a question. In general, a woman can ask her doctor to describe any additional tests that are needed, and to discuss what "intermediate risk" numbers mean. For example, if there is a 1/300 chance of DS, that means 299 out of 300 babies are expected to NOT have Down Syndrome.

Probably: If the placenta is low lying and not marginal or centralmplacenta previa, i usually allow, my patients to continue having sex as long as they have not had bleeding.  You should ask your doctor who will have the information necessary to reliably make the decision.
