when you have a-fib, what is a good or safe heart rate when you exercise?

Atrial fibrillation : We like to control resting rate with a fib to 80 -ish. Exercise rate we try and tailor to the patient if they have a heart structural problem causing the afib. Generally tho not over140, but that again depends on the specifics for the patient.

See details: I heart rate of 180 is not all that unusual when it occurs during significant aerobic exercise. If it returns to normal after the activity is completed there should be no worry.

Target heart rate: A guide for a target heart rate during a good workout is the formula:: 220 minus your age and then take 85% of that value. I recommend working gradually to that goal if you haven't been exercising regularly. If you want to engage in very vigorous workouts, have a treadmill stress test first. A physical trainer could guide you so you won't hurt yourself with improper technique.

Check pulse: Immediately after exercise and again 1 minute later. Normal heart rate recovery is defined as a decrease in your pulse of 15 to 25 beats per minute. Abnormal heart rate recovery is usually defined as a decrease of 12 or fewer beats per minute.  There are several different methods, but this is a good rule of thumb. Checking following 15 min of exercise is good enough, so 30 min is ok too.

Yes: It is safe to exercise close to max heart rate. In fact if your otherwise healthy it is perfectly safe. If you have any chest pain or shortness of breath of course stop. By the way a quick and easy way to determine your max heart rate is 220 minus your age.

?: Bonnie, it's hard for me to imagine that your cardio has not treated your resting heart rate of 155+. This is damaging to your heart whether you exercise or not. Moreover, if your resting heart rate is near its maximum, you're not going to get very far with your exercise.

Interesting question: In theory 220- age is maximum heart rate, but  I have seen some people exceed this formula,  the real question is target heart rate- probably 60-70% of this according to exercise physiology -  about 112 for you.   If you run a bit higher comfortably, don't worry.  As you excercise more your heart rate may drop as you get more fit.  Still, you don't have to go that hard to get benefits. Be well!

Slowly increase...: Lack of conditioning can lead to a HR that increases rather quickly with exercise. Slowly increasing the duration &amp; exertion with exercise - and being consistent with exercise will help lead to a lower resting HR and a slower increase. The max HR recommendations are safe; however, it isn't easy to maintain them for a length of time that would be beneficial. Build up your tolerance.

51 yo male.  chf with no known cause.  exercise about two hours daily.  moderate cardio in targeted heart rate range.  am i overdoing it?  feel great.

Probably not: If you are feeling great, then you are probably in a place to feel proud!  your cardiologist can advise you as to the current limits of your exercise goals... What is your weight and bmi?
