Vancomycin: Vancomycin is removed by the body in 30 hours unless you are anephric and then it can take 37.5 days.

Fecal transplant: Fecal transplants have been shown to be effective in treating C diff. Please discuss this option with your doctor, in case you need to take antibiotics.

Accepted Answer

Yes: A two week treatment with Vancomycin can cure C. difficile infections, however recurrence is not unusual. The stool should be rechecked sometime after completion of treatment to assess cure. I would not be worried about a Bristol stool of 3, particularly in the setting of underlying ulcerative colitis.

diagnosed w/ c-diff 10 12/19/22.. given 10 days of vancomycin. added florastor probiotic. how do i know when i am better & can start adding back more foods to my diet? do i keep taking florastor daily or take a different probiotic for my gut health?

: If you are no longer having diarrhea, you can resume your usual diet. Probiotics are generally not useful.

Probiotic: You can take probiotic while you are taking vancomycin. There is a host of different probiotic brands. Of course, each claims superiority over other brands, but they are all pretty much on par. I like flora brand just because I am more familiar with it but it doesn't mean that it is better than others.

took vancomycin/levaquin (levofloxacin) for meningitis caused by sinuses, then another month of levaquin (levofloxacin). should it be enough to clean out sinuses for good?

It should be. Most: ENT Drs.. treat chronic sinusitis for 30 days,so 1 month should hopefully be enough

Probiotics : Probably help more with prevention than treatment and may be reasonable in patients with recurrent disease. Saccharomyces boulardii and lactobacillus rhamnosus have been studied the most. There is good evidence for fecal transplant] to treat c. Difficile but still considered investigational and not without potential risks.

hi docs, can you tell me if surgical incisions to drain a staph infection and intravenous vancomycin are the most effective treatments?

MRSA?: Vancomycin will kill staph but it is regularly used for methicillin resistant staph. MRSA will not die with regular penicillin or Keflex so drainage and special antibiotics are used. Vanco should do just fine if not they may need to use zyvox (linezolid) a newer mrsa drug

ive recently had a lung removed due to the mrsa infection ive been dealing with for a long time . after a couple months in hospital with pneaumonia and mrsa trying to attack my other organs , the many treatments of iv all vancomycin , i was released?

: Immune diagnostic work up is indicated. There are certain immune defects that may lead to difficult to treat MRSA infections. There are combinations of antibiotics which may be useful in your management. Please discuss upon referral to an ID specialist. Avoid  touching  the nose, eyes or mouth. Monitor temperature and breathing.
