When in doubt consult a dermatologist.

Yes it can be: Moles are removed because they can grow to become melanoma and often it is difficult to tell the difference between a mole and early melanoma. So removal of moles is common practice and the need to be examined under the microscope to make sure they are benign. If they are cancerous(called melanoma) a wider excision(more surgery) is recommended.

moles that change in a short period of time are worrisome.  Most long-term moles are benign and harmless.  Moles that start to grow in width and with a ruffled or multicolor (blue, black, red)border are worrisome.  Any rapid color change within a mole can be a bad sign.  Itchiness and spontaneous ulceration are also bad.  See your primary physician right away if you are worried.

Yes: Melanoma can cause burning and pain, particularly when it grows deeper into the skin.  A mole should never itch, burn, or cause pain.  When it does, that is a sure sign that you should see your doctor to have it evaluated.
