Discriminatory loss: In forms of hearing that effect the nerves rather than the bones in the ear, there is what is called discriminatory hearing loss, which is what you have.  Hearing aides amplify sounds, and that often is not helpful. However, newer technology can reduce or even eliminate a lot of background noises. Talk to an audiologist or an ENT specialist who can recommend appropriate testing and treatment.

Big help: It's like being able to enjoy the sounds of our world uninhibited.  For the ha, the new ones can be programmed to fit your individual hearing loss.  For the ci, it's great for people to be able to perceive the sounds. It's not 'normal' hearing but  with help, they can learn to interpret sounds well.

So find several that you like, then price exact item among various vendors.

If there are no specific causes the ENT person would recommend a good audiologist, who in turn will figure out what type of hearing prostheseis would be helpful. Avoid loud noises! face people when they are speaking to you1 good luck.

Hearing aids: Different types have different problems. They are uncommon. First get the fit right so it doesn't ring or make sounds improperly. Secondly carry spare batteries with you. Third, keep it clean and learn to use the tools right. Otherwise it just takes getting use to and overcoming any psychological issues that may arise from having them. They can be a blessing if you have the type of hearing impairm.
