Normal variant: In some people, the eponychium covers the lunula. Don't let anybody trouble you over this.

: Many conditions can discolor the nails and need to be examined to be diagnosed. commonest is a fundal infection. Pl see your doc or a dermatologist

It is ok, normal: Thumb has the bigger nail and nail bed, and that is how nature made us. You probably noticed this now.

It might but...: I searched & found sites claiming lack of lunula indicate B12 deficiency but have found no objective evidence to support this- it may be true for some but there is no proof. Others say it means hypothyroidism or poor circulation. : All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, your are obviously seeing a doctor who has examined you and is in a much better position to advice than is feasible in this forum.

Biotin: Taking extra biotin, a safe vitamin supplement, has been shown to make nails thicker and stronger.  Many patients report that their nails grow faster as well.  You can get it inexpensively over the counter.  It is worth seeing your doctor, however, as there can be issues associated with poor nail growth.

This may be due to hypoalbuminaemia (low albumin), which is caused by the nephrotic syndrome (a form of kidney failure), liver failure, protein malabsorption and protein-losing enteropathies. A genetic condition, and a side effect of sulphonamides, a family of antibiotics can also cause this appearance.
