Re-evaluate: Foods are fermenting into alcohol. With dm type ii  eat 6 equal meals with  no dairy, wheat, or sugar, 6 servings of colorful vegetables ( a few low carb grains no rice or corn), one apple, nuts and berry fruit in salad with 3 t olive oil divided in 6 equal meals, manage stress, take sufficient vit d ( 10, 000 units of d3 a day fights depression) and   move 60 minutes a day. Try pretend jump roping.

Metforminand Alcohol: Drinking Alcohol increases risk of developing serious, life-threatening Lactic Acidosis, or may cause a decrease in blood sugar.

Skip alcohol dose: How about you skip the use of alcohol and continue the use of the metformin. Most medications cannot be used concomitantly with alcohol without adverse consequences.

Yes: it is not bad because of any particular interaction with metformin, it is bad because ALCOHOL IS BAD FOR DIABETICS.  You are on metformin presumably because of diabetes, and alcohol can further damage the pancreas, reducing insulin production, as well as major potential effects to both increase and decrease blood glucose, depending on amount you drink and whether complications are present.

Prudence advised: B"sd
lactic acidosis is very rare and have never seen it in this setting - the formal recommendation to avoid the combination.  
More likely you might experience hypoglycemia.  this would be more common in adolescents.  Drinking with food would help guard against the hypoglycemia.

Ketones: If your diabetes is not well controlled you may be getting to a ketoacidosis state. Ketones can smell like and confuse older ways of testing for alcohol. New blood and urine tests for ethanol would or should not mistake this.  I would approach who ever is providing you testing with a question about ketoacidosis. Or use this experience to get into much better diabetes control.

How much alcohol??: Alcohol inhibits gluconeogenesis, which is how we make glucose from scratch when we run out of stored glucose and glycogen, and can result in hypoglycemia. It is also a calorie source with almost as many calories as fat (8/gram for alcohol, 9/gram for fat), so it can (when taken in excess) increase blood sugar. However, metformin rarely is associated with low sugar. 1 or 2 are ok, not more.
