Pain Eval: Like any medical encounter a full history and physical examination is performed to evaluate your complaints.  The quality, intensity, relieving and exacerbating factors are important to elicit. Both successful and less successful treatments will be reviewed.  Your functional status and goals will be assessed.  Chronic pain is usually not fully eliminated, but any reduction can improve your life.

Pain Appointment: The first appointment can be lengthy. A lot of paperwork, detailed physical exam, maybe a narcotic contract, maybe an injection... Plan on a good hour of your time.  Return visits are usually much more focused shorter in duration.

what are the pain management options open to me during birth?

3 options: Option 1: natural childbirth including lamaze, relaxation, breathing techniques, use of a focal point, etc.
Option 2: pain medication given as an injection or intravenous.
Option 3: epidural-an injection given in the back which takes away the pain from the waist down. While still allowing you to move around freely in the labor bed.

what is it like to have intrathecal method for pain management during labor?

Great!: Intrathecal block is also called a spinal block.  Typically an Anesthesiologist would insert an epidural catheter to give medication around your spine (in the epidural space) and decrease the pain of labor.  A spinal block is done at the same time and the medication is injected directly around the spine (rather than the surrounding epidural space).  This provides almost immediate relief.

i am under pain management.  i take oxycodone daily,  i run out a couple of days before next appointment and i start having withdrawals. what can i do?

Call: Your doctor and get a very brief 2-3 day refill. If this is not a habit that has developed they should be happy to help you out. I am surveyor have a narcotic agreement signed with them. Good luck.

i noticed on my health record says alcohol use:not currently alcohol/week0standard drinks comment: "weekends" drinks about 1 weekend every 2 months i noticed it after my appointment . i socially drink.do i need to call them it ok? pain management?

: Whatever appears in your health record from your personal history is based on the provider's understanding from talking with you about it. If it is inaccurate, either because you erred or the provider misinterpreted what you said, you have an absolute right to correct the record. Contact your doctor, either online in your record (there is a way to send messages), or by phone or email.

is it ok to be put on the medrol dose pack more then twice? it seems to help for the time & then once finished my pain is back where it started. i'm awaiting my appointment with pain management. i was going to see if my pcp would prescribe another medrol

Medrol (methylprednisolone) D pack limits: Hello. Can't keep taking Medrol (methylprednisolone) Dose packs back to back. Oral steroids are not without risks ( diabetes, osteoporosis, weight gain, glaucoma, cataracts, fluid retention, depressed metabolism, mood swings, etc.). Your upcoming visit with pain management should help you manage these back pain attacks with treatments which will cause you the least  amount of harm for BOTH the short and long term.

sorry! i did not give enough info in my previous question. i have been seeing a pain management doc for a few years & been on prescribed 10mg oxycodone. is it ok to take this med during the week before total knee replacement? i am 59 years old.thanks?

: Discuss all medications you are taking with your treating surgeon and possibly the anesthesiologist. They are responsible for your well-being. Since you have been taking oxycodone for a few years, it should be part of your medical history.

what is analgesia and how is it used during a root canal?

None during RCT: Analgesia is not trypically used during rct, as the procedure is done under local anesthesia. Your dentist may prescribe nsaids after the procedure if necessary.

im going to pain management in the morning to get a shot in my back what should i expect to happen and how am i gonna feel after, and does it hurt?

Accepted Answer

Depends: It would be nice to know about your problem in more detail and also about the shot you are getting. There are different medications introduced for different reasons. You may experience from very little to quite a bit of pain. Sometimes it takes a little while for the shot to start working and you may end up having more pain at first.
