Not long term: A female who had rubella or the vaccine will develop antibodies that are protective against future infections.During any pregnancy the female would pass some of these antibodies along to the baby and they would provide transient ( months) of protection.That or any other child would need the vaccine to develop long term immunity.

Need a booster shot: That result usually means the patient is immune to measles and to rubella, but is not immune to mumps. If she had her MMR shot before, her mumps antibodies are no longer high enough to ensure protection against mumps. She can ask her doctor about getting an MMR booster shot, which would increase her antibodies to block all 3 contagious diseases.

If you are female, it means you will not pass rubella to your fetus if u are exposed to the illness during pregnancy ; get the disease.

Wait it out: There are many instances where the standard screening test for rubella immunity is negative when functional immunity may still be adequate.Your OB will likely plan to give you the vaccine after you deliver to boost any immunity you have. For now, avoid people you know won't vaccinate their kids, & crowded areas or  airports. Good luck.

First repeat the MMR: The MMR was first given in the US after 1971 as a single dose after age 1 yr.By 1990's measles outbreaks at colleges led to addition of a second dose.Antibody screening can suggest the level is not high enough to be protective, but that does not mean you have a bad immune system,just a waning level. You may or may not have received that 2nd dose as a kid, or the batch was not as potent.

i am not immune to rubella. i had my levels checked at the start of my pregnancy. i had the vax in 2007 after the birth of my 1st child because i wasn't immune then either. apparently my immunity wears off. do i need to vax again? baby is 1 month old

Depends: Do you plan another pregnancy ? If so, it may be worthwhile. Sometimes the prenatal screening test will test negative when you actually have enough antibodies to protect you, but the effect of rubella on a fetus is so dramatic it is worth repeating. If not, with past vaccines in your system it may not be needed.
