what does it mean when i touch the top of my belly button it hurts, but when i don't touch it doesn't hurt? could it be something serious?

Several things: Very localized pain at the top of your belly button could mean a small abscess (pimple). Is there any redness? Could be a small umbilical hernia. (Is there any puffiness?) If this has been going on for a long period of time, is is associated with other symptoms? Diarrhea,etc.? Most umbilical pain is related to bowel disorders, kidney disorders, infections, etc. Some can be serious. Check with Dr.

Interesting: That is an unusual situation. The belly button can accumulate debris/sweat and may have developed an irritation. There are some oily glands there. Clean well with mild soap/water. If redness apply a little bit of neosporin with a qtip. if not better in AM or worsens rapidly see MD to make sure not an infection. If you have a piercing nearby may be having reaction to nickel in metal.

Umbilical Hernia?: Intolerable abdominal pain is an emergency.  When ever a doctor hears this complaint it is either get to my clinic right now or go to the emergency room.  This forum is great, but you need to be seen in person today.

Small hernia?: You may have a small umbilical hernia. Sometimes they are tender and sometimes not.  There is no way of answering your question with pure accuracy without physically examining you.

Smelly Belly Button: Any smell or discharge coming from the belly button can be due to an infection. The most common causes of infection in the belly button are due to piercings, fungal infections, yeast infections and obesity. If you are experiencing symptoms such as redness in the affected area, painful swelling, and curd-like discharge resulting in a smelly belly button, you should see your doctor as soon as possib.

i have pain directly above my belly button.  it hurts when touched and sometimes when i move. dr can't see me till next tues. will taking half of an ambien (zolpidem)  for the pain make matters worse?

Likely not: Ambien (zolpidem) will do nothing for the pain, but will make you sleepy. Try ibuprofen for the pain. If pain constant, or worsens, get to E.R. Sounds as if it may be an umbilical hernia. Good Luck.

i have an extremely painful lump just above my belly button. when im in pain it hurts to touch my belly. the lump seems to come and go, the more pain im in the harder the lump is. this seems to happen once a month or so. cant figure out the trigger?

Cyst or LN: Could be a cyst or a lymph node. A lymph node would be concerning in this location, but given your age it is unlikely to be that.  More likely a cyst. These sometimes get red, painful and rupture.  If this gets progressively larger or you have signs or symptoms of weight loss, fever, chills, nausea, diarrhea, etc you should see someone.
