i had the nuvaring in for four weeks instead of my usual three weeks. my periods last about 3 days and brown discharge only. is this normal?

Yes: continuous nuvaring use often times thins out the uterine lining to the point that you have no bleeding or just a small amount.  The brown just means older blood and is to be expected with continuous use.  Its not harmful

Old blood: This sounds like old blood which is normal considering your period was late. This doesn't mean anything specific and isn't necessarily a bad thing. Continue to track your periods. If you have had any recent changes to your medications, activity, stress or general health- it can cause irregularities in your period.

IUD: It is common for women who have a Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud to stop having their period altogether or only have some very mild spotting, this can be brownish at times.  Take care!

Vaginitis : It seems that you are suffering of vaginitis which could be caused by a bacterial or fungal infection or both. Make sure also you get a pregnancy test as well. Make an appointment with GYN provider in order to get possible testing and treatment for it.

This is common: Brown discharge at the end of a period is simply blood that has taken somewhat of a long time to exit your body. Red period blood turns a brownish color when it's been out of the bloodstream for a while. At the tail end of your period, the blood flow can become slow enough that the blood appears discolored by the time it comes out. It should stop after a few days.

See your Gyn: At 47, you are perimenopausal. It is not unusual to miss cycles or have irregular bleeding..... but, you are also at increased risk for endometrial cancer. Your midcycle bleeding should be discussed with your doctor to see if an endometrial biopsy is appropriate.

Yes: Brown discharge is typically just blood that clotted.  As your bleeding decreases during you menstrual flow, the blood may accumulate in vagina.  This blood will clot and have that brown color.

Blood streak mucous: You need to check a pregnancy test. If not pregnant, your period may just be a few days late. The brown blob is probably just some blood streaked mucous and may be the start of your period.
