Enlarged liver: This means your liver is larger than normal in the craniocaudad dimension (measuring from head to toe).  The "normal" measurement for a liver is up to 17 cm.  "no focal abnormalities" means that no liver lesion is seen on the exam, but without contrast, a lesion may be missed.

Probably: Fatty liver in young people is typically related to eating to many simple sugars, too much fat and too much alcohol.  Not surprisingly, this also tends to lead to weight gain.  Impove your diet, loose weight and increase your physical activity. Fatty liver disease or (nash) can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure; it's something to take very seriously and try to reverse. Many ideas: It may well be unrelated. If the heart or lungs fail, the liver tends to enlarge because of extra blood. Acute drug hepatitis would usually render the person jaundiced as well.

Distinguish steatosis (normal liver function tests and no inflammation) versus steatohepatitis (elevated liver functions with inflammation).

Fatty liver disease: A fatty liver can be the result of too many calories resulting in being overweight or obese, it may also be a result of taking drugs or toxins injurious to the liver.  Associated with Diabetes and high cholesterol.
Alcoholic liver disease also results in a fatty liver,  caused by over consumption of alcohol;a herald for chronic liver disease if alcohol intake is not decreased or stopped

X-ray is not: The best way to evaluate the liver.  There are some normal anatomic variations in which the liver might appear spuriously enlarged on X-rays.  Needs to be confirmed or ruled out with another study, probably ultrasound.

Fatty infiltration: is a relatively common finding, is due to a number of various causes(sometimes there is no known cause), and is not necessarily a precursor to cirrhosis.  Ultrasound can detect changes of cirrhosis, although it is not necessarily specific(other infiltrative processes might lok similar) unless there are advanced secondary signs, and biopsy or additional imaging(MRI) might be needed.

The are numerous: causes of liver enlargement including infection/inflammation, fatty infiltration, metabolic disturbances, cardiac dysfunction, and deposition/storage diseases.  Not enough info to venture a guess here.  As far as the "too small to characterize" lesion, the vast majority of these incidental lesions are benign cysts or hemangiomas that require no treatment.

my ammonia level was 179. toxins in blood. sonogram shows enlarged liver. does this mean i have liver cirrhosis as i was told. if so, what type?

Cannot say w/o...: ...Much more history at minimum. However, if mucomyst (acetylcysteine) brings ammonia down and liver given chance to recover, can often improve function. Need to avoid any non-essential taxes to liver function--like alcohol and non-essential drugs/meds. Gi or hepatology (/liver specialist) can help guide management if not rapidly improving.
