Yes: Type 1 diabetes is caused by autoimmunity, leading to death of the beta cells in the pancreas responsible for making insulin.  Once these cells are destroyed, the pancreas can longer make insulin, and type 1 diabetes occurs.

Possible: When someone has an autoimmune condition (type 1 diabetes or autoimmune thyroid disease), he/she has a higher risk to develop another autoimmune condition. Patients with type 1 diabetes need to be screened for thyroid disease every 1-2 years or if symptomatic.

No different : Than type i diabetes mellitus. Usually insulin, your doctor might try oral medications. There is not a lot of information about prevention since there are no warning signs.

Use precautions : It depends on the type of autoimmune disease you have, whether you are on steroids or immune suppressive medications and how well controlled your diabetes is. It is advisable to avoid working in a gas station but if you must, wear an N95 mask. Follow CDC guidelines.  Improve ventilation around your work site. Make sure all customers wear masks. Try to place a plexiglass barrier

No: But a fasting blood glucose or Hgb a1c test would show diabetes. It does not distinguish between the two types of diabetes however.  Type 1 is often considered an autoimmune disorder but type 2 more a lifestyle issue- too much fat not enough exercise. Type 1 usually requires insulin and type 2 only on occasions (may reverse to normal with weight loss).

Possibly: Autoimmune diseases tend to occur together, so checking for antibodies for type 1 dm can be helpful to assess for that diagnosis.  Glucose tolerance should not fluctuate with a flare in gad/insulin/islet abs.  It it more likely to be from treatment of the autoimmune flare (steroids) or stress from the flare.

Hard to say: Hi. I'd like to see the evidence for transient DI. Most autoimmune DI (for which there is no clinical lab test...yet) is not transient as far as we know, although that would be high on the list of suspects for a transient DI, in my opinion, having excluded the other causes you mention. Consider yourself fortunate if it's transient! Happy 2015!

: It's difficult to differentiate LADA and type 2 diabetes mellitus in early phase unless you go through further testing. However, the time you need Insulin for controlling hyperglycemia comes much earlier in LADA (6 months to a year) compared with type 2 diabetes mellitus which can be treated successfully with diet, exercise and oral medications.
