Onychorrhexis?: This could onychorrhexis are brittle nails which often split vertically or have vertical ridges. There are other possibilities that could be a bit more serious . I would recommend consulting a doctor.

Vertical while lines tend to be non pathologic may be related to  trauma, and nails take 6-9 months to grow out. If persists   unchanged would f/u/ w/ dermatology

Probably nail fungus: While a picture is definitely better than ta housand words, your description suggests nail fungus. You can get it checked at a local urgent care clinic for a more definitive diagnosis. In the meantime, put Vicks vaporub on it a couple of times daily for a week or so and see if it makes a difference. Feel better:)

get eva;: Black stripes down one nail could be a subungual hematoma.  Red or brown streaks could be splinter hemorrhages.  Brown/black lines from the nail plate to tip are often seen in people with dark skin &amp; are normal. Subungual Melanoma can cause nail ridges and dark colors of the cuticle. It usually begin in the nail matrix.  It most often effects the thumbs or big toes. Get checked out when in doubt.

Could be bad: A vertical line on the fingernail without trauma to the nail deserves an evaluation by a dermatologist to be sure it is not melanoma, a skin cancer type.

i just saw my x-ray results, what does this mean in laymans terms? the cardiac silhouette is top-normal in size to mildly enlarged. cardiologist didnt say anything about it, i showed her small black lines in thumbnail, again, not concerned?

: Heart size on a chest x-ray is a two dimensional view of the cardiac silhouette. The report indicates that the cardiac shadow is mildly enlarged.  Discuss this finding with your physician, especially in relation to any symptoms.

Hard to say: without seeing it!    However if its a SINGLE line on one fingernail....probably means NOTHING...IF HOWEVER multiple line occur CHECK IT OUT with your PCP  ....ASAP

Nothing at this time: Wait and watch.
Could be unrecognised trauma.
Sometimes immune body responses can cause nail bed damage.
Likely to re-grow the nail.
