Need evaluation: A linear dark streak on the nail needs to be evaluated by a physician to rule out melanoma. If the proximal nail fold (at the cuticle) is discolored, the urgency for evaluation escalates. There are other reasons for nail pigmentation (exogenous stain, normal mole) but melanoma risk must be assessed.
