i have had spasticity with full body muscle spasms(especially in feet) and stiffness for 6 weeks. along with light tingling and feeling of weakness in left hand. does this mean i have als? note: i've had two mri's and both came back normal?

: ALS needs a good clinical as well as lab work in addition NRI.  It could be something else too. Pl see a good neurologist. Wish you well

No: There are multiple medications we use for muscle spasticity to varying degrees of help including flexeril, zanaflex, soma, baclofen, Valium, and skelaxin (metaxalone) just to name a few.  Discuss directly with your doctor what would be best for you.

Nerve: without an exam, I can only give general information. And, electrical component, spasm, in a dirction of a nerve, in a spot where nerves are generally pinched... implies a nerve pinch. The cervical spine can have disk disease. It produces pain the shoots out from the neck down the arms to the hands.

Pain and tightness: The back muscles get tight and it is tough to move secondary to pain.  If you stretch and put some warmth on this area of the back, it will help.  Massage also helps.  It can be associated with exertion, emotional stress or just being out of shape.

Trauma: Usually from an injury, either blunt trauma or strain from lifting or overuse.Rest, Ibuprofen and ice treatments may help.

Muscle spasms: Most likely muscle spasms. This is the most common cause of lower back pain. Usually self limited. Take some otc anti inflammatory meds and it should resolve. If it persists see a physiatrist.

i pulled a muscle in my upper back i think and it keeps spasming.  would a massage be good for this or will it exacerbate the problem?

Ok to try: Gentle massage along with mild anti inflammatory is fine in short term.  Can also try alternate heat and icing.  If doesn't improve over 5-7 days you get formal exam.

NSAIDs and exercise: 85% of us will have an episode of back pain at some point in our lives. The treatment is generally non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, light exercise.  Physical therapy and muscle relaxers can also be helpful.  The pain generally improves over a few weeks.
