Type of brain lesion: Ask your doctor for copy of brain scan report, what type of lesion do you have? Long list of lesions that show up on brain scan- some are there since birth, acquired from trauma/infection, can be benign.  Aside from type of lesion, location also matters.  Lastly do you have symptoms related to lesion. These are ?s to ask your doctor.

Very variable: Most lesions are a few millimeters in size, but some may get quite large, and seem like small cotton balls.  The size is not important, rather the extent and total number results in burden of disease, and, of course symptoms.  Most important is presence of active inflammation and brain atrophy, a predictor of eventual disability.  Control with potent meds, such as one of the newer oral agents.

See your neurologist: Without looking at your actual brain scan, it's impossible to tell with certainty the cause or significance of an abnormality. Lupus cerebritis can put white spots on the brain. More importantly, how are lupus and Sjogren's affecting your daily life? The key is improving your quality of life, not treating the appearance of your brain scan. Good luck!

after a myriad of gradually onset problems (double vision in left eye, memory problems, dizziness, headaches etc) my doctor said my mri showed a brain lesion. i have an appt with a neurologist but not for a while. what could this mean??

Could be anything: When I write my radiology reports, I don't expect the ordering doctor to ONLY say, "You have a brain lesion, see this guy/gal." The MRI report should have been discussed with you in more detail.
  If the ordering doc had no idea what the radiologist was describing, he/she should have called the radiologist directly before your office visit.
  See the neurologist soon and get this cleared up.

MRI DATA: The diagnosis is certainly based on history and exam, but the MRI is also confirmatory.  We discuss "dissemination in time", with lesions emerging and disappearing on serial studies.  Also, "dissemination in space", with lesions in different parts of brain and/or spinal cord.  Location of lesions are helpful.  If there is indication of active inflammation, this prompts aggressive therapy.

One of  diagnostic: Tests. A diagnosis of ms is usually made on the basis of clinical findings, MRI and oligoclonal bands in cerebrospinal fluid. One of the features of ms is recurrent episodes.  See this site for more information on this topic.

Probably normal. : What they describe is a fairly normal finding of the aging process. If you have neurological symptoms, they could represent something abnormal. You can ask your family doctor or neurologist to go over the MRI report with you if you have concerns.
