Lipoma - fat cells: A fatty tumor, or lipoma, as it is commonly known in the medical field, is usually a benign (harmless) growth of fat cells and they can occur all throughout the body, on the back, on the skin, under the arms.  If there is a rapid change in size, and pain, or skin changes like discoloration, or bleeding, it should be evaluated by a doctor.

Unknown: I am not aware of the cause of benign fatty tumors called lipoma. They can run in families but most often they are just present with no known cause.

Yes: The standard lipoma presents as small subcutaneous soft nodules 1-2 cm. in diameter.  Occassionally one sees an extremity lesion, or one of retroperitoneum, lipomatous in origin reaching 20 cm. or more in size.  If a small lipoma grows quickly and obtains a 10 cm. dia. it should be resected, because here a malignant change to liposarcoma is possible.
