im wondering if surgery is necessary for people with hip dysplasia. ive been in pain for numerous months and talked to my doctor but he doesnt think its necessary but i havent been able to do much fir almost a year. ?

Second Opinion: It may be worth getting a second and even a third opinion.  If you are fairly active and want to continue to be active, get another opinion to see if surgery is even possible.

A thorough clinical exam, and possibly X-Ray may be ordered by the new Orthopedist.

Age ?: The common hip flex/extension test done to check for hip stability is good for  newborns &amp; up to about a month or so. After that time it is less dependable as the hip capsule firms. A hip ultrasound by a well trained observer or x-ray is more  able to completely rule out hip issues in older infants/toddlers.

My : My philosophy on second opinions is, if you think you may need one, get it. Don't hesitate. It is always good to get another perspective on things.
First of all let me state that it's great that the hip dysplasia was recognized and diagnosed. I have seen a few adults that suffer from the same problem and were never diagnosed as a child. The statement from the doctor about being continuously monitored yet the follow up is in 8 months does seem a bit contradictory. You may want to ask him to clarify this point.

Recommend ortho eval: At 27, if you have never had your hip dysplasia treated, I would suggest a good evaluation by orthopedics prior to initiating any manual therapy.  It's important that your hip is biomechanically sound to function because it will affect your ability to walk and move.  After the orthopedic evaluation, recommendations for physical therapy/manual manipulations can be made.

Orthopedic surgeon: A periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is a surgery to change the orientation of the hip socket so it is in a better position to cover the ball of the hip joint (femoral head).  PAO is a very successful surgery for improving the longevity of the hip joint and pain in patients who have been diagnosed before extensive injury to the hip cartilage. U of M and Baptist have excellent surgeons for this!

No specific ones.: See your PCP and if its found you are lacking in any particular mineral or Vitamins, then those can be prescribed for you.

A few options: Strengthening the muscles around the hip will help a lot.  You may want to consider some supplements like glucosamine, however recent research hasn't shown a lot of benefit.  Other options include steroid injections, but these don't heal much.  You can consider Synvisc (hylan g-f 20) or other joint fluid replacement injections and possible even platelet therapy injections or stem cell procedures.

Yes: Developmental hip dysplasia occurs in approximately 0.4 % of births. Result of treatment depend on early diagnosis and treatment institution. Between  birth & 6 months of age we use the pavlik harness, between 6 months & 1 yr of age following general anesthesia and reduction a spica cast is used. After age 1 surgery may be needed followed by a spica cast. Follow up is needed.

Abnormal hip: Development dysplasia of the hip (aka ddh) is a condition in which the normal development of the hip is altered.  This problem can affect the acetabulum (the hip socket) and the upper end of the femur and femoral head.
Early detection is critical to allow for early treatment.  Untreated ddh can lead to hip arthritis.
