Herpes?: There has been almost no reported donovanosis in the US for 20+ years, maybe a few cases acquired elsewhere. Same for chancroid. By far the most common cause of genital ulcer is herpes, even in people with no known herpes previously (and could show up 7 mo after exposed). Syphilis is possible but also rare. See a doctor ASAP:  speed is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Herpes?: Herpes is a painful ulcer, and can cause a discharge. Herpes generally occurs in the form of an ulcerated area, and frequently multiple ulcers.  See your gyn provider to make certain what this is.

: The best way is to be treated effectively for the yeast infection. I wonder why you have a diagnosed condition of yeast infection and you have not had adequate treatment. The infection is responsible for the skin inflammation.

Yes: Friction, hair cuts, infections can all cause ulcerations. See an ob-gyn to evaluate the area and get a correct diagnosis.  You do want to be certain this is not a STD or herpes, as these can be spread to your partner.

i'm have a severe reaction to imiquimod (aldara). some ulceration in the vulva, really sore, red and swollen. the pain is excruciating. what to do?

Call doctor: Keep the area clean and dry. Do not apply any more of the medicine. Notify your doctor, Aldara (imiquimod) commonly causes this type of reaction.

: Without a better history and an examination it cant be treated adequately. Pl see your doc or Gyn. In the meantime clean the area wit soap and water and apply otc neosporin ointment. Good luck

hsv2 positive 5+ years, never had outbreak but have constant vulvar pain, intense burning, occasional itching and localized right hip pain. could this be outbreaks without lesions/ulcers?

Possibly: We know that people without symptoms or eruptions can still shed &amp; transmit herpes virus which lies in nerve roots. I assume herpes virus in nerve roots in lower vertebrae could cause neuropathic pain in your case. A neurologist would be best to answer your question, however.

Really?: First you have to make the diagnosis. Koh exam involves gently scrapping the skin and examine the scales under the microscopic by an md. Ringworm is a fungus acquired by skin to skin contact, soil to skin, or animal to skin. Over the counter Lamisil (terbinafine) cream may cure the problem.

Many causes: Infection, abrasion, pad overuse, intercourse, etc. I think you get the idea. When it is swollen, get it checked out by a gyn md.

Accepted Answer

Yeast? Side effect?: Pre-cancerous vulvar lesions like VIN2 can't do this. The most common cause of diffuse genital irritation and itching is a yeast infection. Or if your VIN is being treated with an irritating  agent (e.g. imiquimod, podofilox, sinecatechins) and the cream got spread more widely than the lesion itself, it might cause such symptoms. Check with the doctor treating your VIN. Good luck!
