Viral? Allergic?: Blotchy appearing reddish rashes can occur when the blood flow in the tiny vessels at the skin's surface change, such as in an allergic rash, a viral rash, or in reaction to changes in skin temperature. Viral infections that cause cold symptoms and other symptoms can sometimes cause such skin patterns (fifth disease, caused by a virus, can cause reddish patterns). A doctor can evaluate if needed.

Contact rash: You may have come in contact with something which triggered this rash. Avoid immersion in water, irritants and fragrance. Apply a thin layer of steroid cream three times daily, and if there is worsening, fever or associated symptoms, please see your PCP.

Hand in hand: This has been known as "pudic erythema": a reaction to emotion/embarrassment, usually. It's perceived as "hyperexcitability of vaso-motor nerves" and can go hand in hand with urticarial (hives) reactions - a form of allergic reaction that can happen idiosyncratically (individual/unique to  each person), like may be with strawberry wine. So, there is a correlation.

Mention it to your primary md.

: You probably have tinea versicolor (ie, pityriasis versicolor), a common superficial fungal infection. It can be easily treated with ketoconazole 2% or selenium sulfide 2.5% shampoo. You should see your doctor for confirmation and obtain a script for the shampoo. The OTC products are not strong enough.

probably an allergy: With this distribution and without symptoms of infection like fever, malaise or joint pains this probably represents an allergy.  Diagnosis would depend on the appearance and distribution of the rash.  See your dermatologist.

Fever or medications: Did the rash appear along with a tonsillitis? Were you being treated for it? An infection can cause a rash and a medication can cause it too. If you were given an antibiotic and the rash appeared afterwards, call your doctor.
