Disc: There can be permanent damage from a prolonged untreated herniated intervertebral disc. Weakness of leg muscles is the first sign that serious damage could be forthcoming and is an indication to have corrective surgery soon. Blood pooling causes are varied and include trauma, abnormal blood vessels prone to rupture, inflammation among other causes.

can gastroprasis be caused by ddd in spine with nerve damage. could it damage vegus nerve?  could nerve from back create it? i never abused meds?

Other possibilities: It's not likely that a nerve from your back is causing gastroparesis. And degenerative disc disease in your spine should not affect your vagus nerve. I see you are taking Methadone which i assume is for chronic pain. Even when not abused, narcotics can slow transit through your gastrointestinal tract. You should be checked for diabetes and hypothyroidism to rule out metabolic causes.

Significant: Thoracic outlet syndrome can be frustrating as the nerve compression can lead to weakness and/or muscle wasting into the arm/upper extremity.  Fortunately, it can be treated with some simple manual medicine techniques(i know because i had the unfortunate circumstance to suffer from it)...So if you can find a reputable osteopath he/she can help you recover.

pain in the upper back and shoulders since 2 years .spine mri is normal.can it be nerve damage .?

Unlikely : It's probably musculoskeletal, and may be due to how you sleep, and your sleeping surface or type of mattress.  Also could be due to activity your perform frequently at work, or for leisure. Doesn't sound serious, but if it prevents pub from normal activity, try changing the things mentioned above one at a time and look for improvement. Hope this helps!

spine stimulation: Consider talking to your surgeon or pain mgmt doctor about spinal cord stimulation if you haven't already. Failed back syndrome and chronic pain are common reasons to consider it.

Not permanent: Pain management is just that.  It is a way to manage, or lessen the pain.  Hopefully you make it bearable, or, as i tell my patients, it is intended to make you better able to strengthen the muscles, increase your activity, and make your eventual surgery much more effective.  The only way to cure your pain is through surgery.

is there a scan that can identify, muscle, tendon, or nerve damage closer to spine or ribs, or  pinched nerve?
i ve chronic backpain & mri was normal?

Accepted Answer

Not really: Mri is the best test to see pinched nerves in the back.  If a superficial muscle is suspected to be torn an ultrasound can be done but this is not used for spinal issues.  Unfortunately even with all our current technology we don't have tests that see everything.  A good physician should be able to diagnose your back pain in spite of the lack of a test to tell.

Weakness: Adam - your sciatic nerve is compressed and you have weakness on dorsiflexion This should be checked right away to see exactly what is happening. Anyone can order an MRI - PMD, Neurosurgeon, Physiatrist, PAin Doctor.

Sorry to hear.: Sounds like a very complicated situation.  I am sure you were in a significant amount of pain as few would select such large surgeries.

Unfortunately,  the larger spine surgeries with multiple levels of involvement have less predictable results.

Confirm nerve damage with a neurologist.  Get tested to see if the goal of the orginal surgery has been achieved.

top of my left foot, the muscle on my back near right shoulder both have numbness, i get random stabbing or stinging pain in my feet and ankles. and i have weakness in my hips. could this be related to herniated disc or nerve damage in spine?

Full evaluation 1st: Let’s not worry about damage quite yet. However, you are correct in that right shoulder issues can be from and irritated nerve in the neck and foot and hip issues can be from irritated nerves in the lower back.
There are less common reasons for both to be involved from the same issue in the neck involving the spinal cord. A complete history and physical examination &amp; MRIs are the place To start.
