my albumin was 3.2 which is .2 too low. just a couple of months ago it was normal.  can a change in diet cause that?

Accepted Answer

Yes.: If you have decreased your protein intake this could be reflected in a decreased albumin.  A more accurate reflection can be achieved by measuring pre-albumin.

See below: Low albumin per se would not cause death. There is a very small number of near normal people with congenital absence of albumin. It is the cause of low albumin, e.g., cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, malabsorption or malnutrition that would be the cause of death.

: Seeing the actual numbers would be more helpful, but every now and then I've encountered this ratio but never got any good reason for a normal albumin with a low globulin.  Malnutrition is the only reason I've read about that may cause the low globulin. As long as you have normal liver function labs otherwise and no hematology disorders, I'd disregard the low globulin. Low albumin is more serious

Liver blood tests: The liver is an amazing organ- it does many things including making proteins your body needs. Albumin is a major protein product of the liver. Chronic illness can cause that to decline- esp. if you're not eating. Globulins are other proteins usually made to fight diseases like infections- perhaps you've been fighting an illness for a few weeks/months that explain this pattern.

hello. is a high egfr or low urea cause for concern? if so what could be causing it? my egfr is 136, my urea of 2.3, the range is 2.5-7.8. my creatine and albumin are normal. thank you?

: Low urea is either due to low protein intake or vigorous hydration, nothing to concern, unless you also have low blood sodium (Na), in that case you have to lower free water intake. I would assume you have a quite low serum creatinine too and that's why your eGFR is above normal range. High eGFR is only important in people with early phase of diabetic mellitus which is called hyperfiltration phase

Low normal: Your calcium level is in the lower range of normal.  This would be highly unlikely to contribute to seizures.  It should be repeated with a parathyroid hormone level, and vitamin d levels.

Calcium: What is your ionized calcium level? Why skin biopsy? And what other medications are you taking ie for depression and anxiety? Answer to all these can help us find answer to your query.

i had drank only about 300ml of water and bloods were done at 1:45pm. albumin was 48g/l (35-50) and total protein was 82 g/l (66-87). jumped from 74f/l back in nov. could low intake of water and late time caused it?

All of these: values are within normal limits and vary day to day and perhaps hour to hour...but changes WITHIN NORMAL LIMITS are of NO IMPORTANCE!

Not concerned: Being outside the reference range, especially by a bit, doesn't mean unhealthy for most labs. Your bilirubin level is of no significance, and I am not at all concerned about your albumin, ast, alt or protein either. If your absolute white count is low on follow-up it might be of some passing interest though only marked variants from the reference range. Treat the person, not the numbers.
