It is important to make sure you do not have something serious like a blood clot because if you do it can travel to your heart or lungs and cause death or to your brain and cause a stroke.  Therefore, you need to seek medical attention and have the swelling checked out to rule out something serious.

Well, : Well, lots of factors going on here.  Given his history of knee issues, a day spent doing yard work certainly would aggravate this, and even cause swelling... In the knee, but not the lower leg and ankle.  And the mottling you see is probably not from a close exposure to a heat source.  When i barbecue, i usually end up burning the hairs on my arm long before I do anything to my skin.  And the skin's response to heat is to turn red at first (before it blisters), so i don't think the mottling is from the fire.

So my short answer to your question is yes, take him to the doctor and get him checked out.  It may or may not be a clot, and it may or may not be dangerous, but why take chances?  If it is a clot, it can be a serious problem that needs immediate attention.  Better safe than sorry.

Heart failure: The first item to rule out is heart failure.  Low protein in the blood stream could cause swelling but that would occur in other parts of the body also.  Even if you are on water pills you can swell.  Your meds may need to be changed. See your doctor.  One other possibility -a blockage in your lymphatic system.

This is more than: "spider veins." you sound as if you also have true varicosities, and may have stasis dermatitis, edema, and/or vascular insufficiency. You should see your family doctor, who may refer you to a vascular surgeon who specializes in all of these issues. You may also have orthopedic issues with your bones and joints, in addition to your venous problems. Get this checked out!

Shin splints likely: Make sure you are wearing a reasonable running shoe that fits well. A sudden increase in distance and/or running intensity can harken shin splints which is really just an overuse injury. The treatment is to decrease your intensity/distance akin to a dimmer switch to just below the threshold where symptoms develop. If pain persists for much longer, seek an orthopaedic evaluation.

: Does your attending MD know about the leg &amp; foot swelling? I'm concerned about a blood clot in a vein. A leg ultrasound to check for phlebitis is indicated. Inform your MD or consult a vascular surgeon ASAP
