Lots of things: The d-dimer test will be elevated in many conditions where the blood is making and dissolving blood clots.  We use it to detect abnormal clots in the leg or lungs but unfortunately the test is often abnormal after surgery or trauma, in pregnancy and many other illnesses. This makes it a difficult test to interpret and use.   In the right patient, a normal test can be very useful.

just done my first d dimer test after being discharged from hospital due to an bad uti and kidney stone in right kidney have a rise dimer level of 1.08ug could my infection be the reason its so high .. is my result really high or moderate?

Why the test?: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, an elevated D-dimer is not diagnostic of DVT, a negative is of more value in excluding DVT.

Many causes: Elevated concentrations of plasma D-dimer can be caused by many conditions to include arterial (stroke, atrial fib, etc) or venous blood clots (DVT), pulmonary embolism, infection (sepsis/ inflammatory response), normal pregnancy, pre/eclampsia, malignancy, surgery, tissue necrosis, congestive heart failure, liver disease, intravascular coagulation. Advise following up with your physician.

D dimer: Different laboratories have their own reference levels of D dimer. Inflammation, malignancy, liver or heart disease may be the cause of chronic elevation. I'm curious as to why you had d dimer levels checked. Any signs of inflammatory problems, liver or heart disease? Perhaps your level has no clinical significance. Your physician can advise you best.

D-Dimer is nonspecif: The D-Dimer, while sensitive, is not sspecific. It's used as a screening test for venous blood clots (DVT/PE) but it isn't diagnostic. U need confirmatory tests like the CT scan. D-Dimers is an "acute phase reactant" &amp; increases in bleeding, infections, inflammation, &amp; other nonspecific conditions aside from blood clots. i had a positive d dimer test 0.98 they did ct aniogram with contrast and no clot there. could there be a clot somewhere else? or could bruises cause this elevated level or damage blood vessel from iv ?

Need more context: By itself, d-dimer isn't that useful.  It's a marker for breakdown of clotting factors, so elevated levels imply a clot somewhere.  Humans are always producing and eliminating small clots, especially in connection with menstruation, so an elevated d-dimer can have multiple reasons.  Need further information on why the test was ordered, etc.
