i just switched to a vegetarian diet and  getting headaches and jaw pain. what would be causing these side effects or is this unrelated?

Not directly but...: Vegetarian diets have many proven benefits and should not cuase headaches and jaw pain, so this may be a coincidence. But, you may be allergic to certain foods you are now eating more of. The most common food allergies are to dairy, eggs, wheat, corn, soy, almonds and beans. Try avoiding all for a week (eat lots of veggies), then add back one at a time to see if any of these trigger headaches etc.

Yes: You may not be getting proper nutrition, minerals and vitamins. Talk with a nutritionist to see what you might be lacking.

Cause and effect: Common triggers for any chronic headache problem include:fatigue, poor sleep, illness, fasting, dehydration and stress. Regular and sufficient sleep, meals, exercise and relaxation are important to breaking the pattern. Avoidance of known trigger factors is also needed.

If due to migraine or medication reactions, this is likely affecting brain glutamate which triggers hypersensitivity to stimuli and a headache.  Stress may cause a tension headache, but jaw problems may also trigger.  Some foods, like nitrites, msg, red wines, pickled herring can trigger migraine.

Sometimes migraines can have triggers, which are different for each person. More common triggers are caffeine, cigarettes, and chocholate.
