ive been feeling lightheaded, almost like disconnected. also seeing flashes of light in my peripheral vision, it goes black and flashes...all happening same time quite often. what could cause this? i dont feel like myself either, i feel off..?

: There are several possible causes of these symptoms and all require an urgent visit with your doctor or ER.  Beginning of a detached retina, stroke, and panic attack are the first three that come to mind immediately. Call your doctor and if you cannot be seen right away, go to your nearest ER for evaluation.

Peripheral vision: Auras are visual manifestations of neurological symptoms. Flashing lights are one type of aura people report seeing, and these auras often appear in either eye. Migraines are a common cause of visual disturbances, such as flashing lights, but these uncomfortable visual symptoms can be the result of other physiological conditions as well. Anxiety, retinal disease, htn, and seizures may be an issue.

Eye doctor to check: Seeing flashes of light in one eye, when there is no reason to see flashes of light, may be a symptom of retinal detachment (which means the inner lining of the eyeball is coming loose). That means one should see an ophthalmologist now (retinal detachment is a medical emergency). One can go to the Emergency Room if she has no eye doctor, and the E.R. can call the ophthalmologist on-call if needed.

When rt eye closed?: How do you know it's in your right EYE (as opposed to right FIELD of VISION)? Do the flashes of light (fol) go away when you close the right eye? Do the fol only appear on the right side of your body? Both eyes contribute to the sense of vision on the right side. Either retina could've detached, or you could've some other problem. 1st step: See an ophthalmologist for a complete eye exam. Good luck

Migraine or retina: I migraine can cause this but usually lasts for up to 20 minutes.  A pulling on the retina by the vitreous gel can do this as well and can lead to a tear in the retina.  Please have a dilated exam by an ophthalmologist to be sure.

Flashing: Seeing Flashing lights: due to either traction of the vitreous gel in the eye on the retina (which is an extension of the brain &amp; makes the brain sense flashes); if you have new floaters or "see" a curtain coming over your vision, see eyeMD asap. Ophthalmic migraines are visual symptoms (like seeing flashing lights) without a headache. See your eyeMD to be sure it is not a new retinal hole/tear.

Go back to eye MD: Eye flashes in peripheral vision should always be checked out first. Retinal 
detachment can happen with no warning  even if its the day after your last eye check up.  That is an emergency. 

However, high stress/ anxiety is a good setting for ocular migraines, which are usually harmless but frightening. They may or may not be associated with a headache.

Shaking of retina: The retina only has nerves of vision and if something shakes it, you will notice a light streak.  This can happen occasionally spontaneously. And also in relationship to the aging of the vitreous within the eye.  If the light streaks happen one after another even with the eyes shut, then you should have an evaluation to rule out more serious conditions.
