i am taking claritin (loratadine) for allergies which is helping but i have drainage in throat that i can't get rid of. can i take something along with claritin (loratadine) ?

Claritin (loratadine) and more: You may take Claritin along with over the counter steroid nose sprays such as Flonase or Nasacort (triamcinolone) to best control allergies with over the counter medicine. Claritin may also be combined with a decongestant Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) -- the combination is known as Claritin-D 12 hour. Most people find that once Claritin seems to be less effective, switching to another antihistamine seems to help.

Swimmer's Ear: If you have diagnosed yourself correctly, you have external otitis. Antibiotic ear drops may be in order, but you'll need a prescription for that.

Nothing: This sounds like the flu. No over the counter medications will get rid of the flu, cold, or a bacterial sinus/throat/lung infection. They do help with easing the symptoms though. Any of them are good for that. Chloraseptic spray is good for the throat. And you're too late for tamiflu (oseltamivir) which can shorten the duration a little. Generally, you just have to deal with it. Flu lasts 10-14 days usually.

Nothing: The spiots in throat are part of the viral illness, as are the strange taste sensations you are experiencing. There is nothing you can do except let time fight the virus. You may get some relief gargling with salt water,  or using a topical spray such as Chloraseptic Spray to diminish your symptoms. Keep well hydrated and keep quarantined.

Viral infection?: The nasal mucosa produces about a quart of mucus daily and this mucus (phlegm) is swallowed and to the patient can feel like mucus in the throat.  The buccal (cheek) mucosa, the pharyngeal mucosa also contains glands which secrete mucus into the throat.  You either are aware of normal mucus production or you may have a viral uri. If the latter, 10-14 days is the usual duration of a viral infection.

Allergies?: It is possible that this mucous is the result of allergies. It may also be a sign of copd, especially if you are a smoker or exposed to secondhand smoke on a constant basis. Another possibility is an infection though not likely if this is going on for a long time. Recommend a visit to your physician. In the meanwhile drinking plenty of water may reduce the thickness.

Throat: There are several reasons form the throat clearing. The most common is allergic sinus drainage. Gastroesophageal reflux also gives a lot of people problems with the throat like soreness and even cough. You should consult with your doctor to get a diagnosis and treatment.

No: Antibiotics are required to kill the bacteria that causes strep throat. Claritin-d might make you feel somewhat better, but it will not treat it. Untreated strep throat has the potential to have long term side effects.
