i found a pea sized lump on the back of my 17 month old daughters head and im very concerned.

Reactive lymphnode: There are around 3 or less occipital lymph nodes found at the back of the head.They take in lymph fluid to purify it of harmful cells or particles. The lymph that passes through them is the one that has gone around the scalp. Since this is a tiny pealike, rubbery and mobile lump and your toddler is doing well-it will spontaneously resolve over a few weeks. Large, red, tender ones need a check!

See your MD: Any drainage from a scalp irritation or lump requires visit to doctor.  This may be an infection in an insect bite or an irritated lymph node,

Lymph node: There are many lymph nodes in the neck and back of the head that are often more noticeable because they are located where our fat pads don't hide them. If you feel around you should find several the size of a pea ; sometimes  bigger.They can increase to the size of a big peanut if stimulated by local factors, illness or vaccines.I would just monitor it or have doc see it during regular visit.

Lump: This may be an ingrown hair, inclusion cyst or a burnt out old lymph node. It would have to be examined by a physician to be sure. It may need no treatment if there is no inflammation(redness and tenderness) present. If it enlarges or new lumps appear, more concern is raised and more evaluation and testing  are needed.

Lymph node: This is most likely a normal lymph node. There are dozens located at different sites around the head & neck & noticed because they are not buried deep in tissues or muscles like they are in the rest of the body. When stimulated by bug bites, skin irritation, vaccines or various infections they will enlarge for several weeks before returning to their resting size.

Possible cyst: Some individuals have a prominent point at the base of the skull bone in the midline in the back, and could feel like a nodule .Other likely diagnosis would be a sebaceous cyst, which arises from a hair follicle.  They are benign and do not need to be removed unless iinfected, or painful, or continue to enlarge, in which case an excision is important to identify the true nature of the nodule

Nodes: There are thousands of lymph node located around the body.Many in the neck, head,  behind the ear are prominent in kids as they are not buried in tissue . At rest these are often 1/4 inch in diameter and may grow to marble sized when reacting to a stimulus.Shots,bites or viral infections can increase their size to 1 cm or more.Most will  shrink  down to pre-stimulated size over 3-4 wks.

Neck lump: In this region, ingrown hair or inclusion cyst are common. Enlarged lymph nodes are usually located on the sides of the neck rather than the midline. Visual blurring is best evaluated by an ophthalmologist and would be unrelated to the neck lesion. A physician would have to examine the neck lesion in order to make a diagnosis.
