Oral hygiene: Since your braces collect more debris, plaque and tarter accumulate much faster around the brackets, it is more difficult to reach between the teeth and to floss, regardless,  you should try harder when you have braces get you teeth cleaned every 3 m not 6 months. 
Brush and floss as usual and
use a water pick to flush out the deposits and an interproximal brush to clean between the teeth.

Gum care: Dental care can be harder with braces.  However, with good, regular dental care, you're gums should become healthy and stop being swollen. Floss daily (thread it beneath the braces), brush after meals, use a water pik, and see your dentist & orthodontist regularly. If you follow this and still have problems, talk with your dentist/orthodontist about other considerations.

Threader/proxibrush: You should be able to floss (although it is more difficult) by using floss threaders to loop the floss under the arch wire. I like the type made by butler/gum. You can also pick up a proxibrush. The same company makes many varieties, shapes, sizes. It looks like a small bottle brush on a handle. Go to a drug store and browse the dental hygiene aids aisle, you'll find all this stuff and more to help.
