Propicia: Short term your total testosterone can rise but in general the testosterone levels stay nearly the same as they did prior to starting it. The Dht falls with Finasteride by blocking the enzyme that changes t to dht.

It doesn't . . .: Finasteride (and dutasteride) will not lower your testosterone level. In fact, studies show that it might increase it. However, these two 5 Alpha reductase inhibitors used for enlarged prostate and in male pattern baldness could also lead to higher Estradiol level which could then cause gynecomastia (nipple sensitivity +/- male breast development), erectile dysfunction, and a reduction in libido.

5ARI &amp; DHT: So let's get this right. Finasteride, sold as Proscar &amp; Propecia, along w/its competitor, Dutasteride, sold as Avodart, (dutasteride) do not block testosterone but rather conversion of T into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Therefore, neither 5 alpha reductase inhibitor (5ARI) will make a man physically weak like a boy. However, by blocking T's conversion into DHT, it may raise one's estradiol (female hormone)

Finasteride: Lowers 5-DHT, the most active form of testosterone! It can decrease both libido and response to exercise!

husband was on finasteride and minoxidil orally for 6 yrs. been off finasteride for 2 months. still on minoxidil orally at 1.5mgs. testosterone levels 1 mth ago level 13 and now repeated a month later at 10. he is 31. is this very low? worried?

: Minoxidil can increase blood flow to the liver which will increase clearance of many steroids.   Or he istaking supplements that suppress real testosterone.  He needs a careful evaluation. By a Endocrinologist.

Finasteride and hair: Because Testosterone is not converted to DHT, there is more free testosterone in the circulation. This leads to reduced prostate growth, but also increased scalp hair growth. It does not increase or reduce facial or body hair growth since those are DHT mediated.

No: It actually does the opposite. Finasteride while blocking the conversion of testosterone to DHT prevents the damage and decay that the DHT causes in the hair follicles. It is documented that finasteride makes the hair grow.

Proscar (finasteride) side effects: This is an anecdote. In my last practice i had one patient, a 40 year old male, who underwent hair transplants in 2008 and took Proscar (finasteride) as part of the protocol. He had previously been sexually vigorous, but reported that 4 months larter he experienced total loss of libido and erections, harming his relationships. His testosterone test and  pituitary hormones were normal. The cause is not yet prove.
