what are some good ways to stay healthy when the rest of your family is sick?

Wash, wash, wash: The number one way to keep from getting cold-type illnesses is frequent hand washing and avoiding handling what your sick family members have touched (door handles, keys, utensils, etc) if someone sneezes/coughs try to avoid being in the same room as them for a couple of minutes after the event.  I am a fan of vit c and taking extra during the cold-flu months can help.

have lupus and do my best to stay healthy but when  i get a simple cold or sinus infection, i get a full blown lupus flare causing days of bed rest to recover. is that pretty typical? how to get over flare quickly?

Immune: Remember that lupus is an autoimmune disease, in that your own immune system is "attacking" itself. There are many new meds that can modulate the immune response - discuss with your GP or Rheumatologist regarding the best choice

Viral: you had a gallbladder removal and your family has a viral illness.  Most likely it will be ok but I say your hands frequently and eat healthy.

Diet and exercise: The healthiest way to lose weight is the old fashioned way, with diet and exercise. It is great that you have cut out soda - lots of empty calories! I recommend Weight Watchers, which is a great program for losing weight. Many diet supplements contain stimulants (caffeine, ephedrine) which can cause heart palpitations or other medical problems, so I recommend avoiding those.

Wash your hands: The viruses that cause stomach bugs are spread by contact and enter the body through your mouth, nose, or eyes. The best thing is to wash your hands well with soap and water. And do not rub your eyes or nose or touch your mouth with unwashed hands. Viruses also can travel in food or drinks. No sharing cups or food. Many viruses are contagious before symptoms, so looking well is no guarantee.

Bacteria.: Opportunistic infections occur when pathogens that usually don't make us sick - do so because our immune system is not working well. Some bacteria are essential to good health such as many gut bacterial. On the other hand - there are some bacteria that our bodies are not equipped to deal with.

Many ways!: Having a child in college, i can certainly relate to this excellent question.  Some tips include: 3 healthy meals a day, exercise regularly, participate in intramural sports, lots of hand washing, stay up to date with immunizations (especially the meningitis vaccine, ) and maintain a proper balance of study and extra-curricular activities.

Water intake: Hi. There is a lot of opinion stated as fact regarding water intake. Most of everything you drink is water (juice, milk, beer, soda, whatever; exception-distilled liquor). As a type 1, you should avoid sweet drinks unless you're treating a low. Drink enough to not be dehydrated! Varies with ambient temp, humidity, and activity level. Try to keep urine clear to light; darker urine = need more H2O.

what can be done to help prevent osteoporosis? i know drinking milk is a good start but what else can i do to ensure my bones stay healthy?

Yes, : Yes, getting adequate calcium and vitamin d are essential to maintaining good bone strength.  At least 1200mg of calcium and 800 international units of vitamin d3 are helpful to maintain bone density. This can be from your diet (milk and some orange juices are fortified with both, as are some cereals, and other products).  Also, weight bearing exercise (walking, jogging, elliptical, etc.) help maintain bone density and is a treatment for osteopenia/osteoporosis.

Gout: Alcohol is a major trigger of gout attacks. Drinking less (or not at all) can significantly reduce the frequency of gout flareups. There are also medications that can treat and help prevent gout as well. Optimal levels of alcohol range from zero for people with alcohol related health problems to 1-2 drinks a day for a healthy adult.
