Debris in back of ey: Floaters are debris, usually from eye renewal or condensations of the vitreous gel which fills the back of the eye.  If they are located in the axis of vision, they may be seen in certain circumstances as floating objects in space like flying insects.  If they appear suddenly or there are many or you have light flashes associated, then see your ophthalmologist immediately.

Floaters in eye: Floaters in one or both eyes are generally benign. However, they can be distressing and anxiety provoking. I would encourage you to see an opthamologist (eye specialist) who is the specialist best qualified to determine the origin of the floater, rule out glaucoma and other optic diseases, and start the best treatment for your particular problem.

Normal: You are seeing the vascular supply in the back of your eye.  The pattern of light when you just wake up can cause this to appear momentarily.  It actually is a sign of good visual health.

Floaters: It sounds as if you have had a posterior vitreous detachment.  This is a situation where the vitreous(jelly) of the eye detaches (not a retinal detachment), it then "crumples" up leaving dots, spots, strands of blurry vitreous; i.e. The "floater".  You should have an exam to ensure the incident did not tear the retina, which could lead to a retinal detachment.

Vitreous detachment: Floaters are caused by the vitreous (jelly in the eye) detaching from the retina (typically a normal change in the aging eye).  The vitreous clumps up or develops blurry areas within the jelly causing your floater.  Yes they can be a warning sign.  If when the vitreous changes, causing floaters, the retina is torn you are at risk for a retinal detachment.  You should have and examination.

Floaters are a Pain: While floaters may be a true aggravation, they are not something that your eye physician will get too concerned about, after checking for retinal tears.  Floaters commonly occur in people with myopia -see well close up, but poorly for objects far away.  When they first appear, they are more annoying, especially while reading, as they dance repeatedly back and forth in the same area of one's vision.

Some need surgery: In most cases, eye floaters don't require treatment. Learning to cope with your floaters may take time.
In rare cases, your eye floaters may impair your vision and need treatment. Laser treatment  and floater surgical removal.

: Regular eye examinations are recommended. If there is a sudden change in vision, please see the Emergency room. The floaters should be assessed by an Opthalmologist.  Watch for redness, pain and use sunglasses during daylight hours.
