Some illnesses and medications can upset this balance, and harmful microorganisms can take over.  Probiotic supplements are a way to reintroduce "good" bacteria so that balance is restored.

None: Probiotics have been shown to have little usefulness. A recent study even showed that they had no real val in preventing antibiotic related diarrhea. Why? The pills you can buy will not make a difference. Ignore the hype; now you know the facts.

Unlikely: These usually contain nothing other than a bacterial species designed to repopulate your colon with more friendly organisms after you have received antibiotics or have developed and been treated for clostridium difficile colitis.  Not even sure what overdosing would be.

Pretty safe: In my practice, I use probiotics extensively. Our Western lifestyle with exposure to antibiotics in a variety of ways has cut down on the diversity of bacteria within our gut. Increasingly , data suggests this contributes to disease.  Stress, alcohol, ibuprofen compound this. Choose a probiotic that has a variety of strains, not just lactobicillus. And eat fermented foods!

Yes: Of course taking foods high in probiotics may be desirable for other reasons, supplements contain a "fixed" amount of probiotics (colonies). Many of the "natural products" like yogurt may have "supplements" added to the product anyway. Your body does not know the difference
