No: You are born with cystic fibrosis, you don't "get" it later in life. It may not be diagnosed right away depending on the type and severity of symptoms. For example, a newborn with an intestinal blockage would be picked up quickly, but an older child or even an adult who presented with mostly sinus symptoms might not get diagnosed until later.

Birth to teen years: The most common variant of CF is detected at birth or would appear shortly thereafter anyway.  Most cases are caught by the teen years, but rarer forms show up as late as 30 or so.

: Your palms draw up some water in the shower &amp; wrinkle. Fine. Same thing will happen swimming or other forms of lengthy water exposure. It has NOTHING to do with being a CF carrier. It is not a sign of pending doom. You are overthinking this.

No: If memory serves me well. CF was not added to the newborn screening program until later.About 10 years back, the state expanded its screening program from 5 to more than 25 conditions, including CF. The symptoms might present with bowel blockage at birth, obnoxious smelly stools in infancy or may not have obvious symptoms for years. There is some individual variation from case to case.

i was born with cystic fibrosis. i'm now 35 and my lung function has gradually worsened the last years. i know that survival age is about 40 and i'm at peace with that. however, i still wonder: are there any recent findings about cystic fibrosis?

Mgt: I would advise following your lung function closely with your pulmonary specialist, optimizing your nutrition, and treating any exacerbations with antibiotics and chest physiotherapy. The use of DNAase has been shown to be effective. Some patients may benefit from treatments specifically targeted to their genotype. The CF foundation is another good resource for patients. Stay well.

: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is usually diagnosed well before age "36", so unless there is a history of repeated lung infections, and respiratory distress, CF is unlikely.  See a pulmonology physician for an exam and further testing.

more than 10 million americans are symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene. This blood test can help detect carriers, who could pass CF onto their children. To have cystic fibrosis, a child must inherit one copy of the defective CF gene from each parent.

Not likely: It is not likely.  CF manifests during childhood, most often in infants,  however, there are some forms of CF that are not diagnosed until later in adulthood (even though symptoms would have started in childhood).  These particular forms of CF result in frequent sinus or upper respiratory infections, and can be incorrectly "written off" as chronic sinusitis or upper respiratory disease.
