Exercising to lose!: Exercise is the cornerstone of losing weight and keeping it off.  Teenage obesity is on the rise compared to 20-30 years ago in large part due to the fact that today's teenagers are much less active. Video games, cable/satellite tv, computers, facebook and cell phones have made it less likely that teens will venture outdoors.  More programs like the nfl play 60 are needed to encourage exercise!

In children, we need to take into account age &amp; gender, using BMI percentile w/healthy being 5th to 85th percentile. 135# on 5'2" 14yo female is considered overweight at 90th percentile (http://nccd.cdc.gov/dnpabmi/Calculator.aspx). Review growth curve w/Family Doc or pediatrician

Calories: Increase calories from good sources. 34 kg for a 13 year old is not far from normal range.
Between 35 and 40 kg would be appropriate depending on hight.

Early baby: I may have answered this before but just in case -

My daughter gave births to twin girls at 32 weeks and there combined birthweight was a little less than 5 lbs.
They are now 8 years old and growing just fine.

All of the nursing personnel in the early newborn babies ward had experienced that in their own children and are superb at their job.

Weight is OK: He weight for her height is acceptable. She is short ( less than 5%ile) and her weight is now between the 5-10%ile.  Her weight loss of about 8-10 pounds a month for the last three months is also acceptable.

If no medical cause is found, then one can add weight by eating more calories of nutritious foods, while also doing weight-training to increase muscle. Proteins: egg white, chicken breast, salmon, ...  Better fats: olive oil, peanuts, almonds, tofu, ....

Weight loss: Unless an 8 year old is extremely overweight it is usually better to just help them grow into their weight.  The beautiful thing about being a kid is that they grow! if you can help her learn to be more active and eat healthier foods in serving sizes that are appropriate for her age then she will be able to stabilize and grow into her weight.  Sugary drinks are a big culprit of extra calories!
