Weight loss: Unless an 8 year old is extremely overweight it is usually better to just help them grow into their weight. The beautiful thing about being a kid is that they grow! if you can help her learn to be more active and eat healthier foods in serving sizes that are appropriate for her age then she will be able to stabilize and grow into her weight. Sugary drinks are a big culprit of extra calories!
