if my blood test shows left shift of neutrophils, which i understand may be related to fighting infection, would not the overall number of neutrophils and therefore wbc also show increased number? thanks?

Accepted Answer

: The white cell count could be within normal range but it can still be relatively high depending on your baseline number.
Give example: if you normal white cell count is 6K and it is now 10K which is still in normal limit but in fact it increases 66% so if the neutrophils percentage is 90% it can be a true left shift even the total neutrophil count may be still within normal limit.

This may be anything from leukemia to white cells with a mild mutation that keeps them circulating rather than wall-bound.

i have had a wbc done recently and it came back with a number 17 i have been sick for almost. 5 months with all kinds of abts of none helped?

Need more info: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, it is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be additional tests. You may wish to consult an infectious disease specialist.
Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

It's close to low nl: Improve diet, eat healthy, avoid stress. Hope you don't have major symptoms such as fever, pain, sources of infecion  anywhere in body. For your reassurance get the counts tested in 1-2 months time. Sometimes periodic low counts can happen as a part of the normal routine. Have an eye, but don't fret much unless you catch up infections, feel low in energy level, easily fatigued etc.

An in creased: White blood count would be over about 10.5 to 11 in most labs.

Possibly: Bv does not cause an elevation of the white count. You may have endometritis.

Above normal: White Blood Cells (WBC) travel in your blood stream to fight off infections. High WBC's can indicate that there may be an infection in your body or that there is an underlying immune problem overproducing white blood cells.  It can also be attributed to surgery, extreme exercise, trauma and certain medications. Talk to the doctor who ordered the test for follow up and explanation.
