blood test shows wbc count 12 e9/l , neutrophils count 9 e9\l and mcv 27.4 pg. i do not have any apparent symptoms of any infection. what could be a reason for these abnormal results?

: Idiopathic leukocytosis is not rare and certain medication may cause that too. You should have it rechecked in 3 months just to make sure. You give us MCV which is low but no other numbers such as Hb, total red cell count so I can't tell if any relationship between low MCV and mild leukocytosis.

There is, but...: ...without understanding whether these abnormalities are new or chronic its hard to peg their clinical significance at this moment. Never however ignore abnormal lab results. See what your doctor has to say, since he/she understands the context in which the tests  were ordered, and best appreciates your overall health picture.

Clinical context: This number might highlight as 'elevated' depending on your lab's cut-off values. The question is 'what' is your baseline WBC? If your body is stressed for some reason (often infection, but other things as well), the WBCs could increase. Also people without a spleen can have a higher WBC than others. See below...: A common cause of increased WBC is represented by infectious/inflammatory conditions; however, other clinical associations are possible including more serious diseases like leukemia.  It is important to know what type of cell causes the increased wbc.  Is it because of an increase in neutrophils or lymphocytes?  A CBC with differential and morphology would be a reasonable next step.

A little high...: Generally speaking, for an adult patient, the usual range considered normal for the WBC count is between 4000 - 10, 500/microliter so a value of 12, 700/microliter is slightly higher than the upper limit of normal and may indicate many different clinical situations including, most commonly, infection/inflammation.  Please consult your physician for adequate diagnosis and treatment.

Contact doc: You should not be in pain three days after surgery, Contact the doctor who did the surgery. If that is not practical, go the emergency room of the nearest hospital.

Need to examine: At a minimum it would require examination of peripheral blood smear by a pathologist and depending on the findings, additional investigation may be needed. You should discuss the matter with the doctor who ordered the blood cell counts.

How do you feel?: If the individual white cells all look normal and you feel well, I would not be alarmed. Reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall a bit outside on either end

Mildly elevated : Both platelets and WBC are mildly elevated as seen in infectious and non infectious inflammatory states.
