i'm about to get a walking boot for soft tissue damage. won't it be hard to walk because my legs won't be even? and how can i clean it? thank you!

Accepted Answer

Don't worry: Many are no thicker than a standard sneaker. Most all come off easily for lite cleaning though that is not necessary most of the time. It's still easier to manage than a cast!

i have a suspected soft tissue injury (xray state the knee isnt broken) that i was told at casualties to rest and if the pain persisted for longer than 72hrs to see my gp. what can my gp do? the pain isn't getting any better and i can not walk

Knee injury: Consult an orthopedic specialist for diagnosis and treatment because of persistent pain and inability to walk without severe symptoms. Any appropriate further  testing will be done.  In the meantime elevate the leg, apply cold applications and, if you can take them, anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or naproxen may help.

See below: You could have a ligament or cartilage injury. If not better with rest, ice, compression, and elevation I would recommend seeing a musculoskeletal specialist for further evaluation and recommendations.

If you are "on your own" suggest that the provider who ordered the BOOT be the decision maker!

It immobilizes : The foot so that the foot is not going thru its full range. They often have rocker bottoms, so your not spending a lot of time on any one particular part of the foot.

when do you prescribe a cast vs a walking boot after foot and ankle injury?

They are similar: A cast and a walking boot are similar and accomplish many of the same goals. The main difference is that you can remove a walking boot but cannot remove a cast. Walking boots are great when the condition that you are treating is safe to remove from the immobilization temporarily, eg to take a shower. In instances where it is not appropriate to remove the immobilization, a cast is better.

What type of injury: Did you twist your ankle or where you in fall or accident? Need more information to help you out. But 7 days for any injury to the ankle is too soon to worry about it not healing. As far as the difference in opinion from the doctors, have the doctor who told you there is a fracture to go over the x-rays with you and show you exactly where the bone is broken. Then ask the 2nd guy to debunk it.

Rigid orthosis: A "short CAM walker" is often prescribed for an accessory navicular.  If this is not tolerated a rigid orthotic, loose fitting shoe, and anti-inflammatory medication can help relieve symptoms.  Although rare, if symptoms persist the accessory bone is removed.

Yes: That is the idea of the walking boot.
But talk to your doctor since some still want you to use crutches with no weight bearing.
