You're right: Everybody needs a small amount of a few dozen chemical elements ("minerals") and about a dozen little organic molecules.  Apart from vitamin d and iron, it is very hard to avoid getting plenty of these in a reasonable diet in the developed world. We see real vitamin deficiencies in child abuse, alcoholics on benders, and crackpot diets. A year's worth of vitamin/mineral pills should cost <$10.
