i was prescribed to take a vitamin d 50,000 iu gel capsule. im terrible at swallowing pills and from the repetitive attempts, my gel capsule exploded. can i still swallow it or will that cause side effects? im not sure if its a time release pill?

: You can still swallow the pill if the contents are not lost or are still intact. No side effects if you keep contents clean.

i am 17 years old and 12 weeks pregnant .. i recently got prenatal one a day advanced vitamins, it comes with the choline tablets and the multivitamin soft gels, am i susposed to take one of both or just one or the other?

: Take 'em both each day. The importance of choline for neural tube development in early pregnancy is a relatively new discovery. It's not included in many prenatal vitamin formulations yet, so it's provided separately. Congratulations, take good care of that baby. At 17, it is a big challenge. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Vitamins: A good multivitamin is a good idea.  It's like an insurance policy for when we don't eat right, don't sleep well, or are especially stressed.  Go to a good store or get some guidance because the popular brands are typically very week and not helpful.  Please take vitamins orally; little will get absorbed topically.  B12 best sublingually.

Accepted Answer

Moisturize nail: Nail plate is generated by the matrix under your nail fold.  Like skin, nail plate require moisturizing.  Vitamins or any other active ingredient in gel form does nothing to the nail plate when applied on top as little to no absorption will occur thru the plate.  The best care for nails is to reduce trauma (ie manicure) and moisturize routinely with usual hand creams.

Very quickly: Once the vitamin d is absorbed (within an hour) it goes to work. The issue is that if your blood levels are very low the higher your supplement level the quicker you'll feel results. It's always best to have your blood levels checked to know how much to replace.

Yes: Yes you can. Most medical use of topical Vitamin A is in the form of retinoic acid, which can help with acne and other skin conditions. Retinoic acid often causes skin irritation. Applying Vit A is less likely to irritate the skin though may be less effective. See http://tinyurl.com/gku32cw

my doctor recommended i take 2,000mg of vitamin d daily. i just bought 25mcg(1,000 iu) per soft gel. how much do i take? or did i buy the wrong one?

2 of the 1000iu: Vit D is generally measured in international units. 2000iu is ok, but really 5000iu would be better, especially since there is a virus around you are trying to avoid getting.  Best to get a level 1st as vit D fat soluble , but virtually almost never is someone toxic

Probably not: But biotin deficiency is rare and biotin readily available from dietary sources so that the need for the supplement is questionable, especially in such a large dose.  There is really no data to indicate harm in taking it, but in pregnancy we like to err on the side of caution and avoid things that are not clearly indicated.
