can you lose any vitamins when you get a sunburn?

Accepted Answer

No: Vitamins are metabolized by the liver and kidneys. If they are water soluble (b, c), they are secreted in the urine.  If they are fat soluble (a, e, k), they are stored in the fat.  The skin does not secrete or store vitamins so a sunburn would not effect them directly.

Sunburn easy: Most likely you have sun sensitive skin. Of Irish descent? Discuss with your Dr.

Oral Treatment: Oral tocopherol or tocotrienol may reduce inflammation associated with sunburn.  Higher doses of oral lysine may reduce a herpes simplex lip outbreak after sunburn.

Low: deficiency is less than 20, 20-29 is insufficiency and 30 to 80 is optimal. Your PCP may place on Vit D supplements

Goals: Will have to be set prior to take any chemicals. While vitamins may help individuals with deficient states and/or symptoms attributable to specific deficiencies, vitamin supplements are no longer believed to have proven effects, maybe with the exception of placebo effect. Talk to your treating physician if you would be a good candidate for vitamin supplementation.

Vitamin : For a young healthy person, simply eating a healthy diet rich in leafy green vegetables, red and orange vegetables, some fish   is sufficient.  One might consider a multivitamin, but this is probably not necessary if you are eating right.  Green veggies are rich in lutein and orange veggies have lots of beta carotene in them. Both compounds are good for eyes.

Un-necessary usually: IV vitamin preparations have been promoted by several clinic systems over the years, and there has never been convincing evidence of any profound contribution to health maintenance or recovery from chronic disease.  Some isolated roles perhaps exist, but I would discuss fully with your doctor whether such a direction should be pursued and why?
