Low: 1000 units is still low. It takes time to replace vitamin d. Oftentimes, you need much higher dose to get to an adequate level.

Vit D unlikely : Vitamin D is an unlikely cause of skin rash. Something in the vitamin pill may cause a rash if you happen to be allergic to the non-vitamin ingredient in the pill.

RDA: Rda (recommended dietary allowance) for ages 1 through 70 yrs is 600 iu including during pregnancy and lactation. For infants, its 400 iu while for >70 yrs, its 800 iu. Of course, much higher doses are required to treat the deficiency.

I give more: I prescribe 50, 000u vit d weekly for 6-8 wks and 50, 000u monthly thereafter.

Varies with age/sex: Older men and women, &gt; 70 yrs, at greater risk for bone fracture have the highest RDA's (recommended dietary allowances) for vitamin D: 800 IU/day. Except for infants, 600 IU daily is recommended for both men and women throughout adulthood. Fortified foods (including milk and cereal) and sun exposure provide most of this for Americans. Fatty fish (salmon, tuna) are best food sources. Good wishes:)
