Sounds ok if...: Sounds ok for a typical normal person. Testing for 25-OH-VitD2 and 25-OH-VitD3, and then adding the results to get the total vitamin D level, can help the doctor check the source of the vitamin deficiency and the treatment progress. There is debate over when it would be needed to do these tests. Some doctors feel that giving people more vitamin D would avoid deficiencies and avoid doing lab tests.

No way &amp; values are: low. Vit D3=what counts &amp;=only common vitamin deficiency in US. 30 ng/ml=bottom 2% US population, 100 ng/ml=top 2% US population. Go for near top: important for Ca+2 absorption, bone strength &amp; several other issues. Multivitamins about marketing/money; not health; thus avoid. Most bang for buck=a quality 50,000 IU capsule of D3 once weekly, recheck levels at 3 month intervals &amp; adjust as needed.

Depends on dose: If you are on very high dose vit. D -m 50, 000 iu, it only comes as d2 . Otherwise you should be on vitamin d3 that is what almost all otc supplements are.

D2 vs D3: If you have a choice, use the d3 rather than the d2. The d3 is a more useful form for the human body. There are very technical differences between these compounds. Note that I am not using the term 'more natural' since these compounds are often both made synthetically.

2K IUs of Vitamin D3: is a drop in the ocean w/ a D level of 12.  Please do what your doc says but I prefer 5K daily of D3, 10K for the first week w/such a low level.  Peace and good health.

D3, 5000-8000 IU day: In vitamin d deficiency many physicians prefer a daily dose of 5, 000-8, 000 iu of vitamin d3 rather than 50, 000 iu once weekly due to poor absorption of a single dose of 50, 000 iu. Once 25 hydroxy vitamin d levels reach 60 - 80, the daily dose (5, 000-8, 000) is usually cut in half and the patient followed to ensure the new dose is able to maintain therapeutic vitamin d levels.

I have prescribed: Many time but never actually smell them myself. Best way to tell is to bring the bottle to your pharmacy where you got your medicine and ask them.

D2 D3 and more: Vitamin d2 (ergocalciferol) is a "prodrug" meaning it must be converted to its active form - d3 - to be beneficial. That being said, knowing your vit d3 level can be more helpful. Vitamin d3 levels in the 50 ng/ml range are considered optimal. Remember, sunlight, fatty fish, fortified foods and even shitake mushrooms can all contribute to vitamin d levels. Proper levels ensure proper immune fnxn.
